Traffic by Channels

Direct

  • Direct is the channel by which users arrive at your site/app via a saved link or by entering your URL.

Display

  • Display is the channel by which users arrive at your site/app via display ads, including ads on the Google Display Network.

Referral

  • Referral is the channel by which users arrive at your site via non-ad links on other sites/apps(e.g., blogs, news sites).

Paid Search

  • Paid search advertising is a type of digital marketing strategy that allows companies to pay search engines to place their ads higher on relevant search engine results pages (SERPs) with the goal of driving traffic to their site. Pay-per-click — or PPC advertising — is the most common form of paid search.

Unassigned

  • An unassigned channel is a channel where Google Analytics doesn’t know where traffic is coming from.
  • This can happen when a traffic source or medium isn’t set manually, or doesn’t meet Google’s rules. For example, if an event generated by an audience trigger isn’t tied to an existing session, the source/medium might default to “(not set)” / “(not set)” and appear as unassigned
